Castaways still standing; beer still cold
By Alex Luces staff writer Jupiter Courier September 19, 2004

As Hurricane Frances made its mark along Palm Beach County and farther north through the Treasure Coast, it left many homes and boats in shambles along the Jupiter Inlet.

But the Square Grouper at Castaways Marina kept its head above water and within 48 hours after Frances' eye had moved ashore was serving cold beer to weary hurricane victims.

"I expected it to be completely annihilated," Jim Burg, owner of the popular watering hole, said on Sept. 7. "We're at the mouth of the inlet and we took it head-on, and we're here. We're really lucky to have everything."

"I didn't think I'd have a place to come back to," added bartender Vicky Revelle. "It's a blessing that this establishment is still here."

The bar's dock was the only casualty suffered at Castaways, and it was one that was expected.

"It was just a matter of time," Jim Hinton, a consultant for Castaways, said of the dock. "The dock will be destroyed and rebuilt."

But Burg credits more than mere luck for the salvation of his bar. He credits the good will of Seminole Indian spirits.

"Former Chief Jim Billy told me to put a hatchet on the ground so that the chickee hut will still be standing," said Burg.

And though Burg credits the hatchet as a guardian of sorts, he credits the people who associate with Castaways as its redeemers.

"A few employees came and worked to help us, as well as regular bar frequenters," said Burg. "If it weren't for the reliable customers and good employees we'd still be buried in palm fronds.

"I think it's great," said Al Wilshire, a retiree and regular customer who was in Naples during Frances. "This is the best place in the country."

And Jupiter residents aren't the only ones to enjoy the local bar. It was nominated early in the summer for the Grolsch Best Beach Bar Award. The nomination followed a year in which the bar was featured in a Victoria's Secret photo shoot and the Jimmy Buffett-Allan Jackson music video for "Five O'Clock Somewhere."

But it wasn't enough. Grolsh announced over Labor Day weekend that Nikki Beach on Miami's South Beach took top honors.

"I'm glad we're here so we can be in the running next year," said Burg. "I would hate to have to win (the award) and not have a bar here.

"We're still the same great bar that was nominated, and we're still going to strive to be No. 1."

But even in the elation and relief that followed Castaways' escape, there was still trepidation over other hurricanes -- first Ivan, and now Jeanne -- and what about that next wave of thunderstorms roiling off the coast of Africa?

"Even though we made it out of this one, all storms are serious," said Burg.
"If (one) comes, we'll take the hatchet and mount it right back on the ground."

Country star plays 'Little Bitty' Jupiter show
By Bill DeYoung staff writer Jupiter Courier March 14, 2004

Alan Jackson and his band surprised 1,100 fans with an impromptu concert Friday at Castaways Marina

JUPITER - What would you pay to see and hear the biggest name in country music up close and personal?

About 1,100 people caught country king Alan Jackson's act in Jupiter on Friday night, and nobody paid a cent.

Jackson, who owns a home on Jupiter Island, played a surprise concert at Castaways Marina on the Intracoastal Waterway. Clearly enjoying themselves, he and his 10-piece band, the Strayhorns, performed for almost four hours in the shadow of the Jupiter lighthouse.

The multi-platinum superstar and his backup musicians were resting up before their spring tour - which starts in two weeks - and they got itchy to try out some new songs, explore some old ones and to just "have a little fun," Jackson said.

Besides, he told the crowd, the fishing's been lousy.

The impromptu performance was also a birthday gift to Castaways owner Jim Burg, who turned 38 last week. Jackson, 45, is a frequent patron at the Square Grouper, the restaurant's beach-themed bar.

It was there, in 2003, that Jackson made the video for his chart-topping "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere." Fittingly, he opened Friday's outdoor concert with that song.

Audience members - tipped off to the show when Jackson himself called a radio station in the afternoon - had been packing into Castaways' sandy back yard for hours. The fire marshal ordered the bar building closed at 7 p.m., an hour before Jackson appeared.

By 7:15, people dozens deep were pressing against a makeshift picket fence about four feet from the edge of a tiny plywood stage.

"How do you get your drinks out here?" Jackson joked when he appeared at 8.
"Y'all can't even turn around, can you? What kind of place is this?"

Fans were lined up along the seawalls, on the marina docks and along the back fences, and the expansive sand parking lot was standing room only.

Fans who had been standing on mud flats in the river at low tide were waist-deep in water four hours later.

Jackson, relaxed and in good spirits, played many of his hits, from the up-tempo "Chattahoochee" and "Don't Rock the Jukebox" to the mellow "Remember When"
and "The Blues Man."

He also is known for such hits as "Little Bitty" and "Gone Country."

The gems, however, were the cover versions of other artists' songs.
Frequently consulting a little notebook at the back of the stage, Jackson would ask one of his guitar players what key a certain song was in, the drummer would count it off, and they'd go for it.

They played Hank Williams ("Mind Your Own Business"), Hank Williams Jr.
("Whiskey Bent and #### Bound") and Conway Twitty ("Linda on My Mind").

Jackson laughingly changed George Strait's "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?" to "Does Fort Pierce Ever Cross Your Mind?"

They played rock 'n' roll ("Summertime Blues"), country-rock ("Long Haired Country Boy") and three Merle Haggard classics ("The Way I Am," "Big City"
and
"I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink").

"We don't get to cut loose like this and sing anything we want to," Jackson said. "I don't know about y'all, but we're having a good time."

He told the audience he was going to play "til the sun comes up," but the show ended just before midnight.

"Once I heard him talking on the radio, I realized it was real and they were actually going to play," said Stuart resident Kenny Blackwell, owner of Aqua Pool Maintenance, who was pressed up against a chain link fence before scoring a prime spot on the sand just behind the musicians.

Blackwell drove to Jupiter with his wife, Cathy, and their daughter Michelle.

"Even though the place was packed, we parked in the back and just walked right in," he said.

Bar Owner Makes Children's Charity Donation Following Alan Jackson Show

Nashville, TN - Superstar Alan Jackson's widely reported impromptu show at Castaways bar in Jupiter, FL has benefited a local children's charity. During the four-hour long beach front party, Jackson and Castaways bar owner, Jim Burg, announced that a dollar from every beer sold would be donated to the Jupiter Children's Foundation. The thirsty crowd responded resulting in an $8,000 contribution to the local charity.

"I always like doing those types of things for the community," Burg said. "This was not a charity event, but Alan and I discussed it and he thought it was a good idea, so we did it."

Jackson delighted the estimated 1500 fans who packed the marina bar with some of his most well-known hits like "Chattahoochee," "Don't Rock The Jukebox," "Little Bitty" and "Gone Country" as well as classic favorites by Hank Williams, Sr., Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty and Hank Williams, Jr. In 2003, Jackson chose Castaways as the location to film the video for his CMA award-winning, eight-week #1 single, "It's Five O'clock Somewhere" with friend Jimmy Buffett.

The Jupiter Children's Foundation is an organization established in 2000 to benefit underprivileged kids in Jupiter. The Foundation holds various fundraisers each year including hosting an annual golf tournament and silent auction. Music Video Recorded at Local Bar

JUPITER -- Two bartenders juggled rum bottles and mixed fruit-flavored drinks as men in tropical print shirts mingled and danced with women decked out in sundresses and bikinis at the small tiki-style bar on the shore of the Jupiter Inlet. At the center of it all, country music superstar Alan Jackson, barefoot and wearing his signature cowboy hat, strummed his guitar while his latest single It's Five O'clock Somewhere played in the background. Listen to the lyrics, and the scene makes sense: "Oh, pour me something tall and strong. Make it a hurricane before I go insane," Jackson sings. "It's only half past 12, but I don't care. It's 5 o'clock somewhere." Jackson spent the morning Saturday on the water in northern Palm Beach County and later at the outdoor bar at the Castaways Marina just across the water from Jupiter's famous lighthouse filming the music video for his latest single -- which is partly a duet with Florida favorite Jimmy Buffett. Castaways owner Jimmy Burg said he knows Jackson, who has a home on Jupiter Island, through an acquaintance and suggested the spot for the video."It's an incredible location right here on the inlet. The views are spectacular," Burg said. "It's incredibly exciting." Buffett wasn't in attendance Saturday, but will make an appearance in the video. In the song, Buffett sings a verse after Jackson asks, "I wonder what Jimmy Buffett would do?" In the video, Jackson will step though a "magical door" at the bar and onto a stage with Buffett. That concert footage will be shot Thursday in Indianapolis, production officials said. The video will be ready to air by mid-July.

Enduring long waits and rain showers, a handful of Jupiter officials who watched the filming Saturday said they're excited about the international exposure the video will bring to their city. "We're absolutely thrilled. This is going to put Jupiter on the map," said Jupiter Vice Mayor Babs Henderson, who also is a board member of the North Palm Beach County Entertainment Council.

As Jackson filmed part of the video with a band aboard a yacht on the water, spectators on the closed set were left to speculate about what footage will end up in the final video. "I can't imagine they would shoot in Jupiter without getting the lighthouse," said John DuBois, who is also a member of the entertainment council. A group of Dwyer High School students who have been studying film production hung out at the scene all day to get a glimpse of the "real world." "I'm here to see how it's really done because this is what I want to do," said Meghan Mussell, 18, who just graduated from Dwyer and will attend Palm Beach Community College. "For me, this is a learning experience."
