Biography of Jim Burg
Look around the Square Grouper Tiki Bar on any Friday night and Jim Burg blends in with the crowd, relaxing in flip flops, enjoying the evening and taking in the scenery. Yes, he is the owner of the bar and Castaway's Marina. But his laid-back attitude has helped define the casual atmosphere that has made the Square Grouper both a local landmark and one of the nation's most famous bars.
But Jim also has an adventurous streak and a passion for everything exciting. Whether it's fishing in Mexico, surfing across the blue waters of the Caribbean or Hawaii, hiking the majestic mountains at his family's Wyoming ranch, or running the New York City Marathon to raise money for a favorite charity, Jim finds a way to see and do it all.
Born in Tampa, Jim moved to Jupiter at just six weeks old. After graduating from Jupiter High School, Jim attended the University of Florida, where he graduated with a degree in Building Construction. Determined to be his own boss, he jumped into the real estate industry, buying and selling property in Martin and Northern Palm Beach Counties and along the Loxahatchee River.
After a long, successful career that included both building high-end custom dollar homes and land and real estate development, Jim stumbled upon an opportunity to buy a piece of property on the Jupiter Inlet, a neglected piece of land that housed a bait and tackle shop. With his creative vision and a lot of hard work (click here for the full story), Jim transformed the property into what is now the Square Grouper Tiki Bar, a little piece of paradise that houses the 19-ship Castaways Marina and stunning scenery.
And even through Jim has had an abundance of both adventure and success, through the Square Grouper Tiki Bar and the tournaments and fundraisers it holds each year, he gives back to organizations and groups close to his heart, including:
- Busch Wildlife Sanctuary
- Friends of Jupiter Beach
- Hospice of Palm Beach County
